Holidays in Sauerland region:
The Sauerland region’s trees are said to be the healthiest in whole Germany. This hilly region is located in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany’s largest state by population. The impressive 843m Kahler Asten is the highest mountain of the region and attracts more than 500,000 visitors each year.
The Möhnesee, Sorpesee and Biggesee are lakes with impressive dams.They are especially popular locations for walking as they give visitors stunning views over lakes and forests. Who enjoys on water activities is exactly right at Lake Möhnesee: Here you can even rent boats. After being that active you deserve a nice dinner at one of the many restaurants at the lakeside. The city of Olpe is also worth a visit. The pretty city centre offers cosy cafés and nice bars.
Another attractive place to go and to see is the picturesque Kreuztal Valley with its half-timbered houses. German beer lovers might like to book a brewery tour in the town of Krombach.
Out and about in the Sauerland regionTaking a break from everyday life in the Sauerland region means fresh air and a beautiful countryside but of course also discovering the region’s fascinating sights. The Atta and Dechen Caves are also definitely worth a visit. These dripstone caves, with their colourful stalactites and stalagmites create a magical atmosphere.
Families will love the Karl May Festival taking place in Elspe every summer. Karl May’s adventure novels about the Wild West come to life with these spectacular theatrical performances.
In winter, the Sauerland region, in particular the town of Winterberg, transforms into a winter wonderland. Bobsleigh and toboggan races as well as international ski jumping competitions are regular events in Winterberg.
