Wellness dictionary

Little ABC for your spa-break questions ...

In their treatment discriptions, wellness hotels often use technical terms, which are hard to understand for potential guests. We have therefore collected and defined the most relevant terms in our small wellness ABC. A tip: Our wellness dictionary also supports word requests. You don't need to know the exact wording.

Lomilomi massage

What does Lomi Lomi Nui mean?

Lomi lomi originates from the Hawaiian and Samoan language and can be translated to “to knead, to rub and too soothe”. Invented in Hawaii, the massage was initially even used to exorcise spirits (Aiku/Aitu) from possessed individuals. Other (more usual) contexts in which the massage is used these days are:

  1. As a healing practice
  2. To release tensions
  3. As a pleasant massage to enhance digestion
  4. As a restorative massage in family settings and to
  5. Eliminate waste and stimulate toxins

Back in the days, practitioners of Lomilomi massages in Hawaii were chosen already at the age of 5, based on weather events, birthmarks as well as on kind behaviour. The lomilomi massage is also known as “loving hands” massage. A Lomilomi massage is a gentle yet very deep massage with continuous, flowing strokes. Lomilomi massages allow guests to relax and to take a well-deserved break from everyday life.

Lomi lomi uses a mixture

of nut oils, breathing and dance techniques and sometimes-even elements of prayers.

The aim of such massages is to let go of unhealthy behaviour and old patterns. The very pleasant massage is these days especially popular in Hawaii, Japan, Europe and Australia and can be usually made us of in spas.
