The Baumkronenpfad tree-top walk on Hoherodskopf Mountain is the perfect way to discover the Vogelsberg Nature Park from a birds-eye perspective. The path is made up of rope bridges, which are fixed to the trees. From the viewing platforms, visitors can enjoy wonderful views across the hilly landscape of the Vogelsberg Nature Park.

In 1941, Bad Salzschlirf’s residents got together to construct ‘Mary’s Grotto’ (Mariengrotte), which was created using the architectural drawings of the Franciscan monk, Maternus. It is located in a former sandstone quarry in Strangelsberg Mountain. Visitors will be treated to some magnificent views across the town of Bad Salzschlirf.
Outdoor lovers will enjoy discovering the Central Uplands with its natural forests, idyllic valleys and moors. As well as the stunning landscape, birds like the kingfisher and dipper are also found in the Rhön region. Visiting the Red and Black Moors are a must. The Red Moor is a raised bog in the Hessian region in the Rhön Mountains. Being 800m above sea level, it’s a popular destination for walkers in summer and cross-country skiers in winter.
A circular walking trail constructed on wooden planks surrounds the Black Moor, which is home to some rare plants and animals like the black grouse and the sundew.
Point Alpha, a Cold War observation point is a fascinating memorial place to visit. It was one of the most important US observation points until the end of the Cold War in 1989.
Another place worth seeing is the Baroque city of Fulda with its 18th century castles, palaces, parks and gardens. It’s about 20km from Bad Salzschlirf and has a medieval old town as well as a great city centre to enjoy a wander around the shops.
