Qigong

Qigong – history

The roots of Qigong reach far back into China's history. The first reliable reports date from between 770 and 221 BC. It is one of the oldest Chinese meditation and therapy techniques. The spread of Buddhism in China also led to the spread of Qi Gong. In the traditional form of Qi Gong it is about the "guidance of Qi". Qi is presented as a universal, spiritual force that animates both the universe and all beings. Essentially there are two forms of Qi Gong: a form with relatively many movements and the completely motionless "silent Qi Gong".

Why should one practice Qigong?

All types of Qigong are based on the idea that bodily functions can only work properly if the Qi can flow unhindered. According to this, diseases are based on a blockage of the qi. According to the teachings, emotional imbalance also leads to a blockage of qi. This should be dissolved by the concentrated movement exercises of Qi Gong.

Three elements work together in this technique:

  1. conscious breathing,
  2. movement and
  3. the control of the imagination.

The different movements direct the breathing, the meditative idea of guiding the Qi through the organs is to let environmental influences fade away and to promote inner relaxation. For the Qi-Gong exercises, ideas from nature serve as mental aids. Many exercises bear the names of animals and are meant to symbolize their movements. The slow movements are intended to calm agitated emotions.

Qi Gong should be used as an accompanying treatment for

  • high blood pressure
  • to reduce the dosage of medication for asthma and
  • to reduce the side effects of cancer treatment

have proven themselves. The ability to concentrate should also improve.
