Berlin, March 6th, 2019: Never before has there never been such a varied interpretation of what the term wellness means to guests. The Wellness-Trends survey 2019 was carried out by beauty24 and Wellness-Hotels & Resorts between the end of December 2018 and the beginning of February 2019. Information was collected from 3,700 Germans who had an interest in wellness and 124 wellness hoteliers. The survey confirms that there is a steady growth within the wellness industry. However, wellness is moving away from its short-term benefits towards guests taking longer breaks and wanting a longer lasting impact. The survey shows that young wellness guests have a different understanding of wellness. For them, nature is an important part of relaxation that can improve health and wellbeing in everyday life.

The popularity of New Year’s resolutions shows just how strong society’s desire for change is. This is also reflected in the Wellness-Trends surveys1 over the past few years. Spa breaks are taken more often in order to improve health and reduce stress. All of us start with good intentions, but it does not take too long before many of us are back to our usual routines. After all, it is challenging to establish a new lifestyle and focus on new goals in the confines of our everyday lives.

Berlin, 7th March 2018. Wellness is all the rage. Around 50 per cent of Germans think that wellness holidays are trendy. Wellness breaks in a hotel are now lasting longer and are coming with higher expectations. People are also treating themselves to well-earned breaks in day spas or thermal baths. They have specific expectations depending on the type of wellness treat chosen. When staying at a wellness hotel, the focus is primarily on a holistic wellness experience and spending quality time with a partner. At the same time, an increasing number of children are accompanying their parents on a wellness holiday. It’s expected that even more people will book their holidays online. Generation Y – meaning future guests – prefers to buy their wellness experiences online.

We’re familiar with the saying ‘less is more’. In times of being almost too efficient when it comes to planning our lives to the very last minute, this saying seems rather contradictory. “We’re so busy being efficient that we’ve forgotten to allow ourselves some much-needed leisure time”, explains Michael Altewischer, Managing Director of Wellness-Hotels & Resorts. We all seem to fill our diaries with so many things that there’s little time left to relax. In a recent survey [1], more than a third of those interviewed thought it was necessary to plan their leisure time to avoid being bored. Weighed down by daily plans and responsibilities, we’re all constantly searching for things that make us happy – but when we find them, we rarely take the time to enjoy them.

Wellness time in a hotel has been redefined. Over the past few years, wellness has become part of everyday life for many people – bringing with it higher expectations for this kind of time-out. What do guests currently want and expect? How does the under 30s target group change the market and how do the offers change? The Wellness Trends 2017 survey was conducted by Wellness-Hotels & Resorts’ cooperation, the wellness travel company, beauty24 and Trusted Shops (experts in consumer protection). This online survey looked at the preferences of 3,535 guests interested in wellness and 101 wellness hoteliers, which formed the basis for this year’s wellness trends.
