Little ABC for your spa-break questions ...

In their treatment discriptions, wellness hotels often use technical terms, which are hard to understand for potential guests. We have therefore collected and defined the most relevant terms in our small wellness ABC. A tip: Our wellness dictionary also supports word requests. You don't need to know the exact wording.

Comedones

What is a comedo?

A comedo is a clogged pore in the skin. Skin debris and oil mix and block the follicle, resulting in a comedo. There are two different types of comedones that can be identified: blackheads and whiteheads. A whitehead is covered by skin whereas a blackhead is not covered. The word ‘comedo’ is derived from the Latin word ‘comedere’, which literally means ‘to eat up’.

Comedones can occur with our without acne.

Acne implies a chronic inflammatory condition that includes both comedones as well as pustules (pimples). Depending on the amount of comedones and pustules it is decided whether a skin condition classifies as acne.

Comedones do not only affect young men and women during puberty but also might appear briefly before menstruation or affect women with a polycystic ovarian syndrome. Also an unhealthy nutrition and smoking can possibly enhance the appearance of comedones.
