Wellness dictionary

Little ABC for your spa-break questions ...

In their treatment discriptions, wellness hotels often use technical terms, which are hard to understand for potential guests. We have therefore collected and defined the most relevant terms in our small wellness ABC. A tip: Our wellness dictionary also supports word requests. You don't need to know the exact wording.

collagen

Collagen is the most widely distributed protein in the human body. It is mostly found in fibrous tissue like tendons, ligaments, cartilage, teeth and skin. Collagen fibres in our skin work like a supportive brace for the cells. When we laugh or frown, these collagen fibres help the skin to return to its original position. These protein fibres can store water, giving our skin its plump and firm appearance.

However, the skin will start to show signs of ageing from our mid twenties because the production of collagen decreases and the deterioration of the elastic fibres begin. One reason for this is due to environmental factors like the sun. UV light and infrared radiation causes the fibres to stick together and have a serious effect on the elasticity of the skin. Stress, sleep deprivation or consuming excess alcohol can also take its toll on the skin and cause premature ageing.   Women often notice more wrinkles at the start of the menopause due to hormonal changes causing the skin to lose its elasticity and become thinner along with changes to the shape of the face.

Once these elastic fibres are damaged there is currently no substance to repair them. An important part in preventing premature ageing from the sun is to use creams containing a high sun protection factor. In addition a hot and cold shower or caffeinated creams help improve the skin’s circulation and regular massages using grape seed oil or mullein oil keep the skin’s elasticity.

Collagen is added to a variety of anti ageing creams to slow down the ageing process, often achieving noticeable results. It is necessary to use the creams regularly because the lifting process only lasts for a few hours. Furthermore, the cream should contain oil to build up a natural acidic protection on the skin, which helps store moisture.
