Autogenic training  -  a method of relaxation through autosuggestion

The word autogenic originates from Greek, meaning self-generating. Autogenic training is a self- relaxation technique, also known as concentrative self- relaxation. The aim is to create a state of relaxation through autosuggestion by using the body’s own healing power. Autogenic training was developed by the German neurologist and psychotherapist professor Johann Heinrich Schultz. The purpose of the technique is to find a balance between active thinking and passive happening. The entire attention concentrates on the inner world of experience at rest and physical and mental relaxation. To achieve these targets the treatment uses suggestive methods called autosuggestion.  The treatment helps to create a balance between tension and relaxation to prevent health problems and poor wellbeing caused by constant stress and tension. Autogenic training is based on four concepts:

  • Tension and relaxation
  • Concentration and rest
  • Training and learning
  • Stimulation of the nervous system and an increase in relaxation

Autogenic training is always practised in a relaxed posture and consists of exercises that focus on the heaviness in the muscles and warmth in the circulation.  An awareness of the heartbeat, breathing, stomach and forehead is achieved. The aim is to achieve a positive mental and physical improvement to body and mind. Emotional tension becomes balanced, tension and pain in the body relieved. Autogenic training improves general wellbeing. It is also used to optimise productivity.
